The right hemisphere is more active in children up to the age of four years, and intelligence across the spectrum of cognitive faculties in children (and probably in adults) is related principally to right-hemisphere function. In childhood, experience is relatively unalloyed by re-presentation: experience has 'the glory and the freshness of a dream', as Wordsworth expressed it. This was not just a Romantic insight, but lay behind the evocations of their own childhood by, for example, Vaughan in The Retreat and Traherne in his Centuries. Childhood represents innocence, not in some moral sense, but in the sense of offering what the phenomenologists thought of as the pre-conceptual immediacy of experience (the world before the left hemisphere has deadened it to familiarity). It was this authentic 'presencing' of the world that Romantic poetry aimed to recapture. - Iain McGilchrist, The Master And His Emissary
Happy New Year to you too! Thank you so much, I do write a bit about it on my personal substack, and I’m hoping to go more in that direction now that I have another outlet for more of my Neoromantic leanings.
The most cogent statements of intents and purposes on the web are in Rmntcn. I think of Ashbery who carried the flame for years and didn't he go off into weeds! People must have encouraged him with jazzy 'get it man's' at readings(i w check r now)or else I donot know how he continued for so long giving those feeling hesitations, good techniques at cost to our comfort. You all have been coherent against such eruptions from the subconscious as I have felt the desire for revenge. I donot have one indignant bone in my body but being open to these straight figure and ground communications from my nghbrhood has laid me open to revenge! May you make a face at yourself and scoff when you feel that, shove it way down. Whitman calls it stamina, that endurance. And democratic vistas is good, scary too because it sounds like a rehearsal for the 20th cent'y.
I have a completed neo-Romantic creative manuscript that has been accepted by the indie Catholic house Angelico Press, to be published probably late next year. (It has a name, but for now that's a secret.) I wrote the very first draft of it about a decade ago, which is to say that Romantic revival has been on my mind for a while now—and so, of course, it's very good to see the work you all are doing. I may mention my project again when we're closer to go-time, since it will likely be of interest to you. Happy New Year!
Interesting! Yes we hope to gather and mingle everyone who has a sense of the turning tides, do send when you are ready :) happy new years I hope 2026 is good to you!
